ObjectEmbeddedNarrative


There's probably a term to describe what I call "object embedded narrative". I'm grappling with the idea that there is something interesting in distinguishing between structured data-oriented use of XML and semi-structured narratival use of XML in things like DocBook, [WWW]narrative-centric vs data-centric. By interesting, I think of whether it is possible to bring narrative (which I think of as unstructured from a computational point of view -- that is, not nicely tucked into the rows and columns of a database) and data.

I'm thinking about the evolution of textual documents. In writing for the printed page, I now have to bring myself out of trying to stick in features I'm accustomed to HTML: the embedding of links or the inclusion of images. With XML, there is the possibility of going much further: embedding complex data in the context of narrative.
